Neonatal Encephalopathy Registry

The Vermont Oxford Network has established the Neonatal Encephalopathy Registry (NER) for newborn infants with encephalopathy and those treated with hypothermia.

The NER identifies demographic characteristics, associated perinatal factors, medical treatments, co-morbidities and outcomes of the enrolled infants.

It also serves the purpose of allowing us to evaluate variations in current practice, monitor the introduction and dissemination of new neuroprotective therapies such as hypothermia, and assess selection criteria for neuroprotective therapy

Moreover, the NER allows us to identify opportunities for improvement in the quality and safety of care for infants with encephalopathy, define important questions for clinical research, and plan prospective research and randomized trials.

Specific Aims

  1. Establish the Registry and necessary infrastructure.
  2. Recruit participating centers.
  3. Identify opportunities to improve quality and safety.
  4. Prepare reports for participating hospitals.
  5. Conduct observational research and disseminate the findings.
  6. Monitor the dissemination of neuroprotective therapies.
  7. Assess selection criteria for neuroprotective therapies.
  8. Define important research questions and design prospective studies.
  9. Secure funding for continuing operations and research.
  10. Conduct observational research on the two year health and neurodevelopmental outcomes on infants who received hypothermic therapy and explore the impact of neuroprotective therapies
  11. To assemble a cohort of infants treated with hypothermia for follow-up at school age and beyond

iNICQ Encephalopathy Multimedia Presentations

In 2006, Vermont Oxford Network hosted an iNICQ series on Neonatal Encephalopathy. This series was comprised of five web conferences on various topics of encephalopathy. These presentations all have an audio component as well as slides. Note: These presentations require Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, Netscape Navigator 7.0 or later, or Internet Explorer 5.2.2 or later for Mac.
