Results

Extremely low birth weight infants (401-1000g) or gestational age between 22 weeks 0 days and 27 weeks 6 days, born during 2007 and who survived discharge were tracked and evaluated between 18 and 24 months corrected age at participating Network centers. Thirty-three centers actively participated in this year's project. One thousand seven hundred and eighty-two infants survived and were eligible for follow-up. Of those infants, 855 received health and neurodevelopmental status evaluations. Twenty-three percent of these evaluated infants were severely growth retarded (< 3rd percentile body size) and 11.7% had microcephaly (< 3rd percentile head size). Thirty-six percent of the infants were rehospitalized and 28% required rehospitalization for a surgical procedure. Overall, 19.9% had severe disability defined as having one of the following: bilateral blindness (.9%), hearing impairment requiring amplification (2.4%), inability to walk with support (5.3%), cerebral palsy (8.4%) or BSID II MDI index score < 70 (16.5%), BSID II PDI index score < 70 (10.9%), BSID III Cognitive < 70 (4.5%), BSID III Language < 70 (10.3%), or BSID III Motor < 70 (6.2%).

2003-2007 Cohort

Extremely low birth weight infants (401-1000 g) born between 2003-2007 who survived discharge home are being tracked and evaluated between 18 and 24 months corrected age at participating Network Centers. Thirty-seven centers actively participated. Data completed for the 2007 Cohort year was combined with data for the completed 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 cohorts and analyzed as a five year cohort. Seven thousand six hundred and fifty-four infants survived and were eligible for follow-up. Of those infants, 4010 received health and neurodevelopmental status evaluations. Twenty-eight percent of these evaluated infants were severely growth retarded (< 3rd percentile body size) and 13% had microcephaly (< 3rd percentile head size). Thirty-six percent of the infants were rehospitalized and 26.5% required rehospitalization for a surgical procedure. Overall, 26.1% had severe disability defined as having one of the following: bilateral blindness (.8%), hearing impairment requiring amplification (1.8%), inability to walk with support (4.5%),cerebral palsy (7.9%), or BSID II MDI index score < 70 (22%), BSID II PDI index score < 70 (21%), BSID III Cognitive < 70 (4.1%), BSID III Language < 70 (9.5%), or BSID III Motor < 70 (6.0%).

In addition we are also using a parental interview and questionnaire. This will attempt to correlate parental perception of infant's status with the information gained from medical evaluation.
