2003 Cohort
Extremely low birth weight infants (401-1000 g) born during 2003 and who survived
discharge home were tracked and evaluated between 18 and 24 months corrected
age at participating Network Centers. Twenty-seven Centers actively participated in this year's project. One thousand one hundred and thirty-five infants survived and were eligible for follow-up. Of those infants, 689 received health and
neurodevelopmental status evaluations.
Thirty two percent of these evaluated infants were severely growth retarded
(< 3rd percentile body size) and 13% had microcephaly (< 3rd percentile head size).
Forty percent of the infants were rehospitalized and 28% required rehospitalization
for a surgical procedure. Overall, 28.8% had severe disability defined as having one of the following: bilateral blindness (.8%), hearing impairment requiring
amplification (1.7%), inability to walk with support (3.7%), cerebral palsy (7.6%),
or Bayley mental development index score < 70 (23.2%).
1998-2003 Cohort
Extremely low birth weight infants (401-1000 g) born between 1998-2003
who survived discharge home are being tracked and evaluated between 18
and 24 months corrected age at participating Network Centers.
Thirty-six centers actively participated. Data completed for the 2003
Cohort year was combined with data for the completed 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 cohorts
and analyzed as a six year cohort. Six thousand five hundred and eighty eight infants
survived and were eligible for follow-up. Of those infants, 3855 received
health and neurodevelopmental status evaluations. Thirty two percent of these evaluated
infants were severely growth retarded (< 3rd percentile body size)
and 12% had microcephaly (< 3rd percentile head size). Forty percent of the infants were rehospitalized and 30% required rehospitalization
for a surgical procedure. Overall, 35.3% had severe disability defined as
having one of the following: bilateral blindness (1.1%), hearing impairment
requiring amplification (1.9%), inability to walk with support (4.1%),
cerebral palsy (8.2%), or Bayley mental development index score < 70
(23.4%).
